Kathy Hersey can really strike up the bands [North Laurel/Savage]

Anyone who knows who Kathy Hersey is knows that Murray Hill Middle has awesome bands because of her hard work and dedication to our students, so it is no surprise that they swept the Kings Dominion Music in the Parks Festival on May 3.

The Wind Ensemble took first place in the Concert Band 1 Division. Their Symphonic Band took first place in Concert Band II Division and the Jazz Band 1 took first place in Jazz Ensemble Division. Great job by all the musicians!

The Savage Historical Society will meet on May 19, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the F&M Center at 9032 Baltimore Street in Savage. Please use the side entrance off Foundry Street. Come out and learn about local history. Meetings are free and open to the public.

The Howard County Police Department wants everyone to be warned about a local telephone scam. Residents are getting a call that states that the Sheriff's Department has a warrant for their arrest because they missed jury duty. They need to pay a fine over the phone to avoid arrest.

Residents are asked to buy a Green Dot Reloadable prepaid card and then give them the number of the card over the phone. The Police Department and the Sheriff's Department never demand you pay over the phone. There have been similar scams that use the IRS or BGE too.

If any company calls you saying you need to pay something immediately that you did not know you owed, be suspicious. Ask for a name and then call them back using a number on the web or in the phone book. Not the one they give you.

No government agency is going to call you and demand money so those you can immediately report to the police. No agency will make you buy a prepaid care. The number for the Police non-emergency number is 410-313-2200. When in doubt, ask.
