Sisters go for the gold in synchronized skating [North Laurel/Savage]

Congratulations to North Laurel's Kim and Sarah Eddy, who won the Gold Medal in the Adult Division at the 2014 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships.

They are part of the team, DC Edge, which Kim has been a member for five years and Sarah for three. Kim started synchronized skating in high school and Sarah in middle school. Kim started a team at University of Maryland that Sarah joined and now they both coach for the team. Very impressive!

Reservoir High School has several members of its Debate and Speech Team heading to the State Tournament. Congratulations to Jake and Joe Smith, who qualified in Policy, Puja Trivedi and Mikal Walcott in Lincoln Douglas, and Ayo Omolana, Dylan Gellis and Daima Rosado in Children's Literature. Chrystal Wilson and Mantaqaa Kabir in Dramatic Duo and Dylan Gellis qualified in Impromptu. The state tournament will determine who will represent our region at the National Tournament in May. Hammond High had many winners at the Howard County STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fair. The winners are Love Chung and Samantha Smith —first place in Biological Science, Tanishka Dave, Emma Denlinger Megan Mantsch and Matthew Ueckermann — first place in Earth, Space Science and Environmental Science, Columbia Dyson, Jillian Hagerty, Katie Lastova and Kathryn Witt — Specialty Award for Outstanding Achievement from the D.C. Chapter of the American Meteorological Society Award and Tanishka Dave, Emma Denlinger, Megan Mantsch and Matthew Ueckermann — Promising Engineer Award from the Society of Women Engineers. Way to go, Bears!

Hammond Middle School's team, Cherry Pi, did well in the state tournament, placing third for their Innovative Solution in this year's Nature's Fury challenge! The team created a carpet that creates electricity when you walk on it so you can charge small devices, like a cell phone during a black out. The carpet was made from piezoelectric crystals that generate electricity when force is applied. How cool are our students? Congratulations to Daniela Ruiz-Perez Geo Im, Garrett Kelly, Swathi Krithivasan, Arjun Trivedi, Miles Callahan, Harrison Morrill and Billy Bott.

The Howard County Board of Elections needs judges for June 24, Primary Election Day, and Nov. 4, General Election Day. You will be paid for training and days worked. Middle School is a transitional time for our children. Integrative Counseling Solutions is offering a free self esteem workshop for middle school boys on March 28 at the North Laurel-Savage Multi-Service Center.
