Common Core forum coming to Reservoir High [North Laurel/Savage]

The PTA Council of Howard County will host a forum on the new Common Core Curriculum at Reservoir High School on Feb. 23.

The program will have representatives from many areas of the education field. Learn about the many changes happening in our schools. The program will start at 5 p.m. and is open to the public.

MakingChange offers free tax help for those who earn less than $52,000 or to small individual business owners with less than $10,000 in deductions. They are located at the Multi-Service Center. Appointments can be made by visiting makingchangecenter.org/programs/tax-prep or call 410-880-5917.

Get onboard at Reservoir High for the show "Shipwrecked" on Feb. 28 and March 1 at 7 p.m. The Advanced Theatre class will be presenting this performance in a black box stage arena so get your tickets while you can. I know we are deep into winter, but it is time to start thinking fall. Kindergarten registration will begin at the local area elementary schools starting February 24. If your child or anyone you know has a child who will be entering school next fall, have them come by the schools and register them.

As many of have seen, the Savage Library is in the process of a long overdue renovation. The building will be much more user friendly, updated with technology and expanded in size. The county has decided to use more environmentally friendly cement for the parking area. This is help with run off to your bay and a clean environment.

While the library is being renovated, remember they have the Express location to visit. It is at 8851 Gorman Road in Suite 102 of the shopping center. Drop by, check out a few books and visit our local Librarians.

Do you have a senior in high school who wants to go to Ocean City for Senior Week? If so, mark your calendars for March 13. Atholton High PTSA and HC DrugFree will be presenting Staying Safe in Ocean City. Come out and find out about what really happens down at senior week and how to ensure your child will be safe. Presenters include Ocean City Beach Patrol Sergeant James McVey and Police Cpl. Howard Caplan. The program starts at 7 p.m. and is open to anyone.

The 50+ Center will host a Healthy Heart, Healthy Mind Fitness Assessment on Feb. 21 starting at 10 a.m. Appointments are required. Call 410-313-0380 for reservations or any additional information. The 50+ Center is in the North Laurel Community Center at 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road.
