February is a busy month for the 50+ Center. All events are open to anyone that is over 50 years of age. The first event will be on Feb. 11 starting at 11:30 a.m. It is the Allied Health Academy Health Fair. Students from the Application and Research Lab's Allied Health Academy will share information on nutrition, health and disease prevention. This is a free event.
On Feb. 12, there will be a lunch and then a Cupid's Ball starting at 11 a.m. Lunch will be lasagna and that will be followed by music and dancing. The music is provided by Sterling Dorn and the Tooo Smooth Dudes. Tickets are $5 plus a contribution for lunch. Singles and couples are welcome.
On Feb. 19, starting at 11 a.m. will be an African American Month Celebration with Julie Hall. Julie is a renowned singer and will be performing classics from the 20's through the 50's including some jazz. After that, there will be a special performance by the Howard County Community College Dance Troupe. Tickets are $6 which includes lunch.
There will also be a Healthy Heart, Healthy Mind Fitness Assessment on Feb. 21 starting at 10 a.m. The Office of Aging will be providing an exercise specialist for free fitness assessments. There will be a series of tests with small groups to measure endurance, flexibility, strength and balance. You will then receive personal scores that you can use to decide what areas of fitness you need to focus on. Appointments are required. Forest Ridge Elementary School will have its Fourth and Fifth Grade Strings and Fifth Grade Band Winter Concert on Feb. 26, starting at 7 p.m. .
Guildford Elementary School will hold its Jump Rope for Heart as an afterschool event. On Feb. 12 second to fifth graders will participate and on Feb. 13 it will be Kindergarten and First graders. There will be a series of jump rope stations for the students to participate in. Money is raised for the American Heart Association.
Our area has been involved in a school redistricting. Parent Orientation Nights have been scheduled at several of the middle schools. Students will be visiting their new middle school later in the year. Patuxent Middle will meet rising seventh and eighth graders on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 27 for rising sixth graders. Hammond Middle will meet rising seventh and eighth graders on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and rising sixth graders on Feb. 26 at 7. Lake Elkhorn Middle will meet rising seventh and eighth graders on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and rising sixth graders on Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. Thomas Viaduct Middle will meet rising seventh and eighth graders on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and for rising sixth graders on Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
