Howard police investigating apparent suicide on MARC train tracks in Laurel

Howard County police are investigating a possible suicide in Laurel after a man was hit by a MARC train on the tracks near the 9000 block of Maier Road Monday morning.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to department spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn. The train did not derail and no one was injured.

Police said a MARC train conductor called 911 shortly after 8:35 a.m., telling officers that a man had jumped in front of the train and was struck. At this time, officers believe no foul play was involved, Llewellyn said, and police are working to identify the victim.

There were approximately 50 passengers on the train at the time of the incident, police said, with the train service making transportation arrangements for passengers.

Llewellyn said the tracks will be closed in both directions, as the investigation is ongoing.
