New Contee Road connection opens in Laurel

A portion of Van Dusen Road near the Interstate 95 South interchange will be permanently closed this weekend as State Highway Administration workers open new portions of Virginia Manor and Contee Roads, according to a news release.

Starting Saturday, April 5 at 8 a.m. the portion of Van Dusen Road west of Interstate 95 to the 6100 block of Van Dusen Road will be closed.

According to a news release, drivers, who previously used Van Dusen Road will now use a new section of Virginia Manor Road to access Old Gunpowder Road. The new extension of Virginia Manor Road will access Old Gunpowder Road north of Gunpowder Golf Course.

The new connection will allow drivers to use the new bridge, crossing over I-95 to reach the Old Gunpowder Road connection toward Laurel Regional Hospital and Virginia Manor Road.

The complete $35.5 million interchange, which is expected to be complete this summer, will provide access from Interstate 95 to the Burtonsville and Laurel areas via Contee Road, and will extend to Virginia Manor Road to the east and Old Gunpowder Road to the west. The interchange is being built between MD 198 (Sandy Spring Road) and MD 212 (Riggs Road) and is expected to fully open this summer, according to a news release.

SHA is reminding residents that the work can be noisy at times and that they should remain alert for work crews in the area.  Drivers are reminded to remain alert for work crews and traffic signs in the area.
