Pedestrian struck, killed on Route 1 in Laurel

A pedestrian was killed early Tuesday morning when he was struck by a truck on Route 1 in Laurel, Maryland State Police said.

Shortly after 4 a.m., troopers from the College Park Barack were called to Route 1 just north of the Inter-County Connector. They discovered that a 2003 Isuzu box truck driven north on Route by Brian K. Esser, 55, of Jessup struck a pedestrian walking in the roadway.

Police identified the pedestrian as Jonathan J. Swinton, 23, of Laurel.

No charges were filed, but the accident remains under investigation. There was no indication of impairment at the time of this investigation. Northbound Route 1 was closed for about three hours during the initial investigation.
