Fire at Popeye's near Fort Meade causes $50,000 in damage

Firefighters from Anne Arundel, Howard and Prince George's counties, as well as Fort Meade, responded on Monday to a fire at a Popeye's Restaurant in Maryland City that closed the restaurant and caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.

Anne Arundel County fire officials believe the fire started in a mulch bed next to the building, located at 3388 Laurel/Fort Meade Road (Route 198), and may have been the result of someone discarding smoking material.

Officials received a 911 call about the fire at about 1 p.m., and arrived to find smoke coming from the building. Officials said it took 26 firefighters about a half hour to get the fire under control.

There were no injuries, but the building had to be closed at least temporarily, fire officials said.
