The Jewish Federation of Howard County will host Purim Palooza, a community carnival, March 9 at Reservoir High School in Fulton.

The annual event, which is targeted at families with young children, is expected to draw more than 1,000 people to celebrate Purim, a Jewish holiday honoring the people’s deliverance from enemies as recorded in the Book of Esther.

Organizers encourage participants to wear costumes, a Purim custom, according to Meghann Schwartz, a community engagement specialist with the federation.

“We wear costumes on the holiday as an allusion to the miracle, that appearances are not always reality,” she says.

Purim Palooza will include music, entertainment, kids crafts and games, kosher foods and a community service project. Additionally, the event will feature a Kids Activity Expo with representatives of local dance studios, martial arts schools, play centers and more.

This year’s carnival is co-sponsored by PJ Library, a national program that provides free Jewish-themed storybooks for children. PJ Library registration and activities will be available at the event.

Event hours are noon to 3 p.m. Tickets cost $5 per person or $15 per family. For more information, check the Jewish Federation of Howard County’s website at jewishhowardcounty.org.
