A single-vehicle accident on Route 99 in Ellicott City last week caused a transformer attached to a utility pole to catch fire, resulting in power outages and road closures, according to Howard County Police.
Police said the driver of the car, a 2000 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on the road near the intersection of Raleigh Tavern Lane around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, when he lost control of the car and crashed into a utility pole, causing the pole to break.
The accident resulted in down power lines and a transformer fire, police said.
Police said the driver and the passenger, both 20-years-old, of Woodstock, were uninjured and released to family members who arrived at the scene.
Police said speed was not a factor in the collision.
The roadway was cleared around 10:45 a.m. Thursday.
