The Howard County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission announced the start of its annual essay contest for county middle- and high-school students.
To be eligible, a student must be a county resident, and write an essay reflecting on an excerpt from King’s 1965 “Future of Integration” address at Oberlin College.
That speech included this statement, and the essay contest’s theme: “The time is always right to do right.”
In their essay, students are asked to consider a time in their lives when they stood up for what they believed to be right, and how the situation and its outcome relate to King’s work.
Complete essay contest rules are available at www.howardcountymd.gov/mlkholidaycommission.htm, or by calling 410-313-6430.
All completed nomination forms and essay must be postmarked, hand-delivered or emailed by 5 p.m, Wednesday, Nov. 13, to 2013 MLK Student Essay Contest, c/o Howard County Office of Human Rights, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 239, Columbia, Md., 21046. Submissions can also be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The winners will be recognized at the commission’s 29th annual celebration Jan. 19, 2014, at the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College.
