A Carroll County man pleaded guilty to a rape charge earlier this week in Howard County Circuit Court stemming from an attack last August on his former girlfriend at her Marriottsville home.
Joseph Dwayne Caudill, 40, formerly of the 3100 block of Cape Hill Court in Hampstead, pleaded guilty to second-degree rape during a motions hearing Wednesday.
Last May, a Howard County jury convicted Caudill of kidnapping and second-degree assault, but was deadlocked on the rape charge, according to State's Attorney spokesman Wayne Kirwan.
Howard County police responded to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center at 11:19 p.m. Aug. 15, 2012, which is where the initial report of rape and assault was taken.
Kirwan said the victim told police that Caudill used a stolen key to enter her Marriottsville home that evening.
According to the charging documents, Caudill used a belt from a bathrobe to detain, assault and rape the victim.
After the attack, the woman was able to flee her residence and run to a neighbor’s vacant home while being chased by Caudill, according to the documents.
Though the neighbor was not home his motion-activated video surveillance system recorded the pursuit and was played in open court during the trial, Kirwan said. Another neighbor testified that she heard screaming that evening but acknowledged that she did nothing about it, Kirwan said.
Caudill is scheduled to be sentenced on March 7.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
