The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held its basketball playoff draw Sunday morning at Long Reach.
After years of championship action at UMBC, the girls basketball brackets have all roads leading to Towson University’s SECU Arena.
Howard County has teams in the 2A, 3A and 4A classifications, and the first round of region play is scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 28.
In the 2A South region, Hammond, Marriotts Ridge and Oakland Mills join three other schools in Section I. The Scorpions received the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye, and will welcome the winner of No. 3 McDonough and the sixth-seeded Mustangs. Hammond, the fifth seed, battles No. 4 Patuxent on the road, with the winner traveling to No. 1 Calvert.
The 3A East region features eight Howard County teams split up between two sections. In Section I, No. 4 Centennial welcomes No. 5 Long Reach – a matchup that went to overtime in both regular season meetings – while No. 6 Digital Harbor travels to No. 3 Mt. Hebron.
Section II is all-Howard County, with Reservoir, Atholton and Glenelg taking the top three spots, respectively. The Gators will face the winner of No. 4 Wilde Lake and No. 5 River Hill. The Raiders and the Gladiators got first-round byes as well, and will face one another in the section semifinals.
Newly minted league champion Howard is the county’s only 4A school. In Section II of the North region, the Lions grabbed the No. 1 seed, and will play the winner of No. 4 Sherwood and No. 5 Blake.
All three classifications’ state championship games take place on March 15.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
