Six goals from John Travisano, and four more each from Scott Bruner and Brad Zulick, powered visiting Howard boys lacrosse over Oakland Mills, 22-1, Monday afternoon. It was the Lions’ largest margin of victory this season.
“We’re just worried about taking it one game at a time right now,” Lions coach Jimmy Creighton said. “We’re worried about tomorrow, and then we’ll start thinking about the next thing.”
The win guarantees the Lions (9-0, 11-0) at least a share of the county title – a first for the program since 1991. The Lions will face Hammond and River Hill this week to close out the regular season.
After starting the game at a slow pace, hardly possessing the ball for the first five minutes, Howard rattled off four goals before the first quarter ended. Evan Riss netted the lone goal for the Scorpions (1-7, 4-7).
The second frame is where the Lions really started to heat up.
After his team scored three times in a span of four minutes, Travisano went on a run from the faceoff position. With 2:32 remaining on the clock before the half, the Howard offense rattled off six more goals – most of which came from the senior’s hand.
“We’ve been trying to push off of any transition situations and faceoff situations,” Creighton said. “John Travisano really got on a roll there. Once he starts getting into a good rhythm, we feel good about our chances from the faceoff.”
In that time, Travisano collected three assists and one goal. Bruner added two of his goals in that span as well.
Howard’s 11 unanswered goals in those 12 minutes made for its most successful quarter of the season in county play as well.
With the playoffs approaching fast, Creighton said it’s important to work out the team’s lasting kinks while they still can.
“You want to head into the playoffs feeling good about yourselves and riding some momentum, so it’s definitely important that we practice hard and play well over the course of this week,” he said. “Decision-making has to get better, and our energy has to be there for the entire 48 minutes.”
