Since winning the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference championship in 2005, Glenelg Country has struggled to get past the quarterfinals.

Monday’s 11-6 victory over St. John’s Catholic Prep makes the next game on the Dragons’ schedule a conference semifinal appearance.

“This was a great team win,” said Glenelg Country School coach Paige Walton.

Chapelgate, which defeated Key School, 14-10, Monday advances to Wednesday’s C Conference semifinals.

A balanced team effort and good clock management helped the Dragons continue their turnaround season.

The St. John’s game was close in the first half, with Glenelg Country in control, but unable to pull far ahead.

A turning point came with the Dragons two players down. Keeper Cameron Baumgardner (11 saves) and the GCS defense kept St. John’s from scoring.

“That was huge for us,” Walton said.

The Dragons did even better, turning the two-players-down situation into an advantage when defender Deja Hursey got the ball and ran it up the field. Teammate Alyssa Arnold rolled the crease and scored one of her four goals in the game.

Glenelg Country then settled into a patient offense to take time off the clock before the halftime break.

Glenelg Country controlled the draw in the second half and that enabled the team to continue its possession game to take time off the clock and finish with a good shot.

A goal by substitute Haley Toomer gave the team more momentum.

“We played well in the first half, but we played really well the second half. There was a lot of intensity and motivation in the second half,” Walton said. “It was a team effort and they showed that today against a good team.”

Glenelg Country will play at No. 2 seed Mercy Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Top seed Friends hosts Park in the other semifinal.

The winners advance to the conference championship game, Sunday, May 11 at 4 p.m. The game will be played at Stevenson University.
