It’s been a week of paybacks for Centennial’s girls lacrosse team. First, the Eagles beat Howard, 16-11, then, on Thursday afternoon at Blandair Park, they beat Atholton, 10-9.

In 2013, Centennial lost to both of those teams, and, gallingly, Atholton overcame a deficit to win in overtime.

“To me, it was eerie how similar today’s (Atholton) game was played,” said Centennial coach Rachel Burton.

Both times the score was 10-8 with Centennial ahead and about seven minutes left.

When Atholton called timeout Thursday, Burton asked her charges, “Does this remind anybody of anything?”

The Eagles really had to reflect on that when Atholton scored to make it 10-9.

Centennial came up with the next draw and went into spread-to-score mode, controlling the play for most of the rest of the game.

“We did not want what happened last year to happen again. We needed to take time off the clock,” Burton said.

The Centennial attack had the green light to shoot, but that shot needed to be a sure thing.

“Dani Wilson played really well today and Martha Hutzell played well in the second half,” Burton said.

Each player had three goals. Kay Kelly and Devin McIntyre added two goals each.

The game’s high scorer, however, was Atholton’s Meghan Quinn with eight goals.

Centennial knew to keep an eye on Rachel Foster and Meghan Quinn. Foster controlled the offense the first 10 minutes of the game, so the Eagles put a defender on her to shut her down but that allowed Quinn more scoring opportunities.

Centennial led by a goal at the half. The second half was back-and forth.

“Today was a nailbiter ….We wanted that win,” Burton said. “It was just so important coming off the Howard win to get it today — to continue with the season the way we want to.”

This week’s pair of victories has boosted Centennial’s confidence.

“Now they know that they can beat teams that they are competitive with. When they have to dig keep, they know they can,” Burton said.
