Students in Howard County got a snow day -- a spring snow day. After winter failed to deliver much snow, an early spring snowstorm dropped as much as five inches and closed Howard County's public schools on Monday, March 25.
That meant that all evening activities in schools, both school- and community-sponsored, were canceled. Included on the list were high schools athletic practices and games.Howard schools initially were under a two-hour delay Monday, which the school system announced at 5:15 a.m. But with more snow expected throughout the morning, road conditions were re-evaluated, according to the school system.
Columbia Association spokesman David Greisman said CA resumed normal operations at 10:45 a.m., although liberal leave was in effect for CA employees.
All martial arts classes were canceled, the Youth and Teen Center at The Barn was closed and Before and After School care also was canceled.
Howard County government offices were open Monday, but liberal leave was in effect for employees, according to county spokesman Mark Miller.
Howard Community College announced via its website that the school would open at noon.
The Howard County Library System announced shortly before 9 a.m. that all branches would be closed Monday because of the snow.
