Ellen Giles was named chair of the Howard County Board of Education Thursday, marking her second time leading the board.
Currently in her third term, Giles has been on the board since 2006, and served as chair from 2009-10. She replaces Frank Aquino as chair.
The board's chair and vice-chair are elected by fellow board members at the first meeting in December for one-year terms. Sandra French nominated Giles for the position, and with no other nominations, Superintendent Renee Foose declared Giles as chair.
Brian Meshkin, ending his term as vice-chair, nominated Cindy Vaillancourt to the spot. Vaillancourt was elected to the board in 2010. Giles nominated Ann De Lacy, elected to the board last year, to be vice-chair.
By secret ballot, board members wrote down their votes for Foose to tally. By a vote of 5-3, De Lacy was named vice-chair of the board.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
