As snow and below-freezing temperatures blanket the region, Howard County schools are closed Friday, Jan. 3.
The announcement came from the Howard County Public School System at about 5 a.m. All evening activities in school, both school- and community-sponsored, are canceled as well. That includes all games and practices for high school sports.
Jan. 3 is the third snow day in Howard County this school year. Students had just returned to school from winter break on Thursday.
With wind chills in the single digits Friday morning, Howard County joins other districts in Maryland in canceling school.
The Howard County Health Department Friday warned against the dangers of prolonged exposure to the bitter cold. Some dangers associated with winter weather, according to a department release, include hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning and injuries from heat sources.
Additionally, Howard Community College will be opening at 10 a.m. Howard County government has also enacted its liberal leave policy for employees.
