The Halloween Spooktacular was the right fundraiser for the Burleigh Manor Animal Sanctuary and Eco-Retreat.
"The event was a huge hit," said sanctuary founder Lisa Davis. "The fall weather was beautiful and people came out in big numbers and had a great time."
The six-hour event on Saturday, Oct. 26 featured hayrides, a costume parade, food and drink, music, a movie and more. More than 1,000 people attended, according to event organizers.
The Burleigh Manor Animal Sanctuary and Eco-Retreat is located at 3950 White Rose Way in Ellicott City.
"The sanctuary opened in June 2012 in honor of my mother, Peggy Davis, a huge animal lover who passed away in February of 2012," said Davis in an email. "The mission of our 501(c)(3) nonprofit is to provide a home and safe haven for abused, neglected and uncared for farm animals.
"We are the only animal rescue in Howard County whose focus is on farm animals. We have approximately 30 animals (horses, donkeys, mules, pigs, goats, cows, and chickens) that we care for with no paid staff and about 5-10 regular volunteers."
Davis said "100 percent" of the proceeds of the Halloween Spooktacular will go to the support of the farm animals (vet bills, feed, farrier services, etc.).
She added: "I am so thankful to all those who came out to support the event and to all of those who helped run it, especially our host the Creig Northrop Team, and our featured partners the Humane League of Maryland and Lilly Maritza Salon & Gallery & MotoArt. It is amazing how much volunteer power it takes to host a big event."
