Last week, a few county residents were surprised to find the "farmer" behind the wheel of the hay ride at Clark's Elioak farm was, in fact, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.
His temporary job as a "farmer" was part of the Farm City Celebration Job Exchange with Nora Crist of Clark's Elioak farm, who traded roles with Ulman for the day.
The exchange culminated with a luncheon at the Clark Elioak farm attended by many from Howard County farms, including Breezy Willow, Bowling Green, Edgewood, Larriland, Sharp's at Waterford, Merry Acres, Rhine Landscaping, Maple Lawn, Dawn Acres, TLV and Falcon Ridge farms.
The group feasted on a meal prepared by Iron Bridge Wine Co. that featured county farm fresh products such as Clark's Never Sell the Land pork, Breezy Willow farm honey graham ice cream, herbs, eggs and a mesclun green mix, Larriland farm tomatoes and apples, Bowling Green farm cheddar cheese and Falcon Ridge fruit-infused vinegar and apples.
The luncheon provided an opportunity for Ulman and Crist to recount what they learned. Ulman entertained the lunchgoers with a story about a concerned hay rider asking him about his tractor-driving experience and Crist spoke about how impressed she was with the county's storm water planning efforts and the Robinson Nature Center.
The luncheon concluded after Ulman named Bowling Green Farm, a 10th generation diary farm, the first recipient of a new $15,000 county Agricultural Development Grant that will support their diversification efforts into the cheese production business.
