The Ellicott City-based Howard County Arts Council announced the 10 young artists finalists for its 2014 Rising Star competition — Curtis Bannister, Musical Theater; Leiland R.W. Charles, Contemporary Dance; Joe Duffey, Irish Step Dance; Steven Eddy, Classical Voice; Annie Gill, Classical Voice; Yoshiaki Horiguchi, Double Bass; Benjamin Lurye, Musical Theater; Carolyn Rosinsky, Cello; Maya Shivani Thakar, Classical Indian Dance; and Trent D. Williams Jr., Contemporary Dance.

These young finalists will compete for the coveted title of Howard County's Rising Star at the HCAC's 17th annual Celebration of the Arts Gala on Saturday, March 29, at the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College. The winner will be announced live on stage and presented with a $5,000 professional development award. 

The gala will also feature the prestigious Howie Awards that honor individuals or businesses that have made a significant impact on the arts in Howard County. This year's recipients are Bruce Casteel for Outstanding Artist, Raissa Howera for Outstanding Arts Educator, and Toba Dobkin Barth for Outstanding Community Supporter of the Arts.

In other HCAC news, the organization is now accepting applications for summer camp assistants (paid) and camp volunteers (unpaid) for its 2014 Visual and Performing Arts Summer Camps. Assistants must be aged 18 by June 16 and volunteers must be aged 15 by Sept. 1.

Camps are offered June 23 through Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with before- and after-care offered from 8 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. More details and applications can found at the HCAC's website at http://www.hocoarts.org in the "Getting Involved" tab. Application deadline for priority consideration is March 1.

Interesting in learning more about Resurrection-St. Paul School and Our Lady of Perpetual Help School? Both schools will host open houses in February.  

Resurrection-St. Paul School is a fully accredited Catholic interparish school for grades Pre-K through 8th grade.  Located at 3155 Paulskirk Drive in Ellicott City, the school's open house is Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 9:30 a.m. 

Our Lady of Perpetual Help School is a Catholic school of the Archdiocese of Baltimore serving students in Pre K through 8th grade. OLPH will host an open house on Monday, Feb.10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The school is at 4801 Ilchester Road in Ellicott City.
