Turn on your porch light for National Night Out on Aug. 7

Howard County Times

Mark your calendar and turn on your porch light on Aug. 7 for the 35th Annual National Night Out. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out in thousands of communities across the United States. The event was envisioned to help people make their “communities safer, more caring places to live.” From block parties and parades, to festivals and cookouts, community events bring neighbors together with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events and visits from emergency personnel. National Night Out seeks to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement.

In Howard County, this year’s kick-off event will be held in Maple Lawn at 7625 Maple Lawn Blvd., Fulton, from 6 to 9 p.m. All are welcome to attend, but residents are encouraged to host or attend a party in their neighborhood. It’s not too late to plan a gathering of your own. Groups can register their event and request a visit from the Howard County Police Department. Although resources are limited, the department will try to accommodate requests. To register an event, go to howardcountymd.gov.

A block party fundraiser to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be held on Aug. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Clarksville Commons. The family-friendly event will feature refreshments and the music of the high-energy band NightLife. Proceeds from the event will help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation advance its mission to find a cure for all people with cystic fibrosis.
