Visitors can watch artists from the Mid-Atlantic region as they paint the old buildings and unique landscapes up and down the streets of the historic district during the fourth annual Paint It! Ellicott City.

The three days of painting begins Friday, July 12. On Monday, July 15, a preview and reception from 6 to 8 p.m. will be held for the 25 juried artists who will display and sell their work in an exhibition in Gallery 1 at the Howard County Arts Council, 8510 High Ridge Road, in Ellicott City.

Maryland Institute College of Art's Mark Karnes will judge the artists, who will compete for more than $4,000 in cash prizes, according to Beth Forbes, Howard County Arts Council Gallery Director and Programs.

The free evening event also includes wine, cheese, music and a lobby full of the open (non-juried) paint-out participants' artwork.

"The focus for us is to bring artists together with the community," said Forbes, who said the event allows people to "see the [painting] process instead of just looking at a painting on a wall."

The juried exhibit will be on view through Aug. 23 at the Center of the Arts. The open paint-out artwork will be moved July 16 to the Howard County Welcome Center, where it will be on display and offered for sale until Labor Day, said Forbes.

To register for the paint-out, go to visithowardcounty.com or call 410-313-ARTS for more information. Registration is also open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 12-14 at the Welcome Center, 8267 Main Street, in Ellicott City.
