County nonprofit supports family, professional caregivers [Letter]

The Nov. 7, 2013 article, "For Caregivers, a chance to unite," shines an important light on the growing number of family caregivers in Howard County — an estimated 56,000 — and the challenges they face as they adjust their lives to tend love ones.

At Bigger Conversations, a Howard County-based nonprofit, our mission includes supporting family and professional caregivers. We have created a six-week program of Caregiver Wellness Circles to provide healing support for family caregivers, with an emphasis on reducing stress and promoting wellness. We offer these circles several times a year.

This year we were grateful to receive support for the program from the Community Foundation of Howard County. I was very glad to see the great work of the Office of Aging highlighted in the article, and in particular, Valerie Liss' work. The first time I contacted Valerie at the Department on Aging, she responded to my request for assistance with enthusiasm. We are grateful to Valerie, who has been instrumental in helping us get the word out to caregivers and to the success of this program.
