Mt. Hebron wrestling opens season with convincing win

In his 25 years as a head wrestling coach, Mt. Hebron's Todd DeCrispino has learned that to win a dual match, you want to avoid forfeits and pins, while scoring bonus points yourself.

So DeCrispino was understandably pleased after his team's 60-16 win over visiting Atholton Thursday night, when his team scored five pins and won four matches by forfeit, while allowing only one pin.

"It's nice to have a full line-up," DeCrispino said after his team's season debut. "And it's nice to come out with the explosiveness that we did."

The Vikings won six of the first seven bouts, including pins by Brandon Wilson (120), Alex Bisant (126), Connor Strunk (138) and Joe Kendrick (152), to build a 30-5 lead.

Atholton's defending county champion, Pat Mullens, finally stopped the bleeding with a 15-0 tech fall at 170. It was Atholton's second tech fall of the match, following sophomore Josh Pickens' 16-1 victory at 132, but that ground was lost at 182 when Atholton conceded its first of four forfeits.

One of those forfeits was to freshman Josh Kendrick (106), one of the league's most highly anticipated rookies. Older brother Joe Kendrick, a state placewinner last season, recently committed to wrestle collegiately for Millersville University.

Atholton's only pin came at 195, when Brian Rodriguez caught his Mt. Hebron opponent on his back with four seconds left in the first period. After that, the only contested bout came at 285, where Albert Kim scored a reversal and then pinned his Atholton opponent with less than 20 seconds remaining in the opening round.

The most exciting bout of the evening came at 145, where Sean Kelly held on to defeat Phil Frazier, 13-11, in overtime.

Kelly scored a five-point throw early in the contest, and Frazier spent the majority of the first two minutes fighting off of his back. He eventually reversed Kelly to his back after a wild tussle, but Kelly regained the upper hand to stake a 9-4 lead heading into the second period. Frazier made up ground with a takedown and an escape in the second, and then caught his second wind in the third, scoring two takedowns with less than 30 seconds left to force overtime. That effort seemed to sap Frazier's energy though, because Kelly scored the winning takedown on a reshot ten seconds into the extra period.

Mt. Hebron will compete in the Scorpion Duals tournament this weekend at Oakland Mills, while Atholton will host its 14th annual JV tournament.
