The small schools division was not as friendly to Howard County wrestlers, as only one — Glenelg defending heavyweight champion Sean Twigg — advanced to the championship round. Twigg will attempt to become a two-time state champ against Winters Mill junior Jake Utz.
Utz broke up a potential all-Howard County heavyweight final by knocking off Oakland Mills' Roy Kadje, 3-1. In February, Twigg pinned Utz during the state dual meet championship match.
Glenelg, which finished the semifinal round in fourth place with 63 points — more than 30 points behind first-place Winters Mill — had two other wrestlers go down in the semifinal round.
Sophomore Tim Null (106) was caught on his back with 37 seconds left in his match against Owings Mills' Jake Rendelman, and senior Anthony Pagnotta (170) lost a 6-3 decision to North Carroll's Eddie Merrill.
Oakland Mills also had two other wrestlers lose in the semifinals: senior Zach Hensley (120) and sophomore Jaron Smith (160).
