Surviving a couple of stiff challenges, Mt. Hebron kept its perfect record alive Saturday with a pair of victories at the Eagle Tournament at Centennial.
The Vikings, which improved to 5-0 overall, defeated Century, 8-4, and North Harford, 5-4, in games that were played with a 70-minute time limit. The second-game win over North Harford required two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with time running out to pull out the one-run decision.
Down by one against the Hawks with two outs and no one on base, Mt. Hebron started its final-inning rally with a single by Evvie Buehlman and a walk by Maddie Bennett. A wild pitch moved the runners up and then Anna Sutherland (two hits) delivered a fly ball to the outfield that the right fielder was unable to handle and that allowed both runners to score.
Bennett not only scored the winning run, but drew three walks overall and also pitched a solid game. Lindsay Bishop caught Bennett defensively and delivered a double and a single at the plate.
Earlier in the game, after trailing 2-1 after the first inning, the Vikings scored two in the second on hits by Lindsey Bishop, Molly Bishop and Alli Bluhm (2 RBI).
Buehlman pulled double-duty in the first game of the day, pitching well and putting together a single, double and 2 RBI against Century. She struck out seven and gave up just six hits as a pitcher.
The Vikings blew that game open with four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Buehlman and Molly Bishop stealing home. Mt. Hebron then added another three in the fourth, with Aaliyah Montague-Bass and Erin Vogan each delivering triples.
Century scored four in the bottom of the fourth, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.
