"That was insane, he dove for it and his limbs were going all over the place, it was pretty cool," Meyer said. "I've got to thank my defense today."
Mt. Hebron also threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, when Meyer drew a one-out walk, and advanced to second on a bunt single by Jake Snyder, but was stranded on base after two fly balls.
In the top of the eighth, Hammond nearly scored again as Matt Cassett singled and made it to third on a wild pitch, but was left there after Stevenson caught Sicca's well-hit ball to right field.
In the bottom of the eighth, Fred Simard hit a leadoff single to shallow center field, then pinch runner Chris Anderson gambled by advancing all the way to third on a bunt by Leimbach. Leimbach took second on the throw to third, and Hammond then intentionally walked Sam Janiszewski to set up the force at home.
Still with only one out, Mt. Hebron's Turner nearly won the game on a fly ball to left field, but Grifffin — Hammond's freshman left fielder — made a strong throw to the backstop to keep Anderson at third.
On the very next pitch, though, Meyer ended the tension with his line drive to center field.
"That was a tough win. It's really exciting," Culley said. "I'm just happy for the guys, because we've been battling and battling."
