After dealing Mt. Hebron its first loss of the season three weeks ago, Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid said, “It would be nice if we could share the county title with them.”

As it turns out, both teams won out the rest of their county schedule to accomplish that.

Glenelg had the easier route, facing more Columbia-area teams. Mt. Hebron had to get past frequent rivals River Hill and Centennial.

Tuesday, Glenelg defeated Long Reach, 10-0, and Mt. Hebron downed Centennial, 3-0, to finish league play with identical 10-1 records.

“This is so nice for our seniors,” said Mt. Hebron coach Jeannette Ireland.

The Vikings’ last county field hockey title was in 2005.

Mt. Hebron entered the season knowing it had to fill in for several key players who graduated, including its leading scorer and its starting goalkeeper.

The Vikings kept their expectations to themselves and just let the victories mount up.

Tianna Wallpher, Katie Anderson, Molly Bishop, Lauren Schaaf and Hannah Scheid doing the bulk of the scoring. Monica Linn stepped up to control the midfield and Chachi Kelehan emerged as a talented goalkeeper.

Stephanie Asher, Megan Taylor, Morgan Philie and Amanda Hoyt were the foundation of Glenelg’s team this season, but other players stepped up when needed.

“We don’t really have a set line-up in about four positions, and every game someone steps up and does a really good job,” Kincaid said at the season’s midpoint.

This is Glenelg’s sixth consecutive county title. The Gladiators’ only league loss was by a single goal to Marriotts Ridge very early in the season.

The playoff draw is Oct. 17. Glenelg (Class 2A East) and Mt. Hebron (Class 3A East) won’t see each other again this season.
