The Marriotts Ridge boys cleared the final major hurdle on their way to the first county championship in program history Tuesday, defeating Glenelg 99-88 at Cattail Creek Country Club.
Bennett Buch scored 29 points, while Nick Mejia (26 points) and Jackson Courtney (25 points) starred as well, for a Mustangs’ squad that improved to 10-0. Glenelg, which was led by 28 points from Steven Segrist, fell to 8-2 on the season.
While Buch says that Marriotts Ridge understood the importance of the match against the Gladiators, there weren’t a lot of nerves.
“I feel like everyone just kind of knew that if we play like we are capable, we would be fine,” said Buch, who made three birdies and just one bogey during his round. “Every since that Atholton match, when we set the record, it’s kind of taken the pressure off. We’re not thinking about hitting numbers any more, just going out and playing.”
Buch actually got off to a slow start, making a bogey on his first hole. But he steadied the ship and eventually went on to birdie three of his final four holes. As a member at Cattail Creek, he said there was a comfort level coming down the stretch.
“Those last four are the birdie holes,” he said. “I know for me, if I can get through No. 5 at even or one over, then I feel like I can attack and finish the front strong.”
Mejia made two birdies of his own, using that to carry him to his one-over-par score. Courtney didn’t make any birdies, but made just two bogies on his way to his score of two-over par. Michael Dorsch rounded out the team’s scoring with 19 points.
Glenelg, playing on its home course, certainly gave the undefeated Mustangs a run for their money. Putting three guys in the 20s certainly helped the cause, with Young Lee (23 points) and Hayden Mikk (20) playing strong in support of Segrist.
Drew Marcoux rounded out the Gladiators' scoring with 17 points.
Marriotts Ridge finishes up the regular season later this week against Reservoir (6-4), where a victory would not only secure a championship but also wrap-up the program’s first undefeated campaign.
Glenelg finishes up against Mt. Hebron.
