Marriotts Ridge advances to 3A/2A girls lacrosse championship game

Most teams haven’t figured out a way to stop Zoe Stukenberg of Marriotts Ridge this season. Queen Anne’s couldn’t find the answer either on Friday night.

Stukenberg scored 33 seconds into the game and finished with five goals and three assists, leading Marriotts Ridge to a 13-5 victory over Queen Anne’s in a Class 3A-2A state semifinal at Annapolis.

The Mustangs (17-1) now advance to the state final on Tuesday or Wednesday at UMBC. They’ll play Century, who edged C.M. Wright, 10-9, in the other state semifinal Friday.

Stukenberg is headed for Maryland next year and entered the game with 67 goals and 38 assists. Her quick moves, especially in traffic and near the cage, proved to be too much for the Queen Anne’s defense to stop.

“She was unbelievable tonight,” Marriotts Ridge coach Natalie Gaieski. “I don’t know that there’s many players that can stay with her.”

Stukenberg scored twice in the first six minutes as the Mustangs never trailed. Both of those goals came on similar shots from about 10 yards out in the middle for a 2-0 lead with 19:19 left in the half.

It also seemed to set the tone for the game, putting Queen Anne’s in a bit of an early hole that proved too much to recover from.

“I wanted it tonight,” Stukenberg said. “I was hungry. I feel so passionate about this team and this season. It’s my senior year, and it’s an emotional year.”

Marriotts Ridge simply had too much speed and quickness for Queen Anne’s (16-1-1). That helped the Mustangs at both ends of the field as they had little trouble clearing, forcing transition and finding scoring chances.

Taylor Hensh of Marriotts Ridge pitched in with three goals. Marissa Davey added two goals, and Lexi Souder helped with a goal and two assists as six different Mustangs added points.

Goalie Rachel Ortell made six saves for Marriotts Ridge, three of which came in the early minutes and kept the Lions at bay.

The early defensive stand also helped Marriotts Ridge break the game open. After Ali Moulis scored for Queen Anne’s with 17:48 left in the half to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 2-1, Marriotts Ridge then scored six in a row. Included in the run was four goals in a stretch of 2:20 later in the half en route to an 8-2 halftime edge.
