“The team chemistry is great,” said Atholton coach Julia Reynold after the game. “We have a group of four juniors that have all played varsity for the past three years together. They’re really reading each other well.”

Mayhew led all scorers in the game with 13 points, but Mitchell (12) and Kalere Caldwell (8) also got into the action against the Wildecats.

Throughout the contest, Mayhew and Mitchell connected on multiple transition opportunities from quick steals that often translated into points.

After giving up 13 points in the opening eight minutes, the Raiders held Wilde Lake to single digit totals in each of the subsequent quarters.

“We played great team defense. The girls were really focused, and we knew we had to work on turnovers, layups and execution. That’s what we wanted to work on yesterday to prepare for today,” the coach said.

Wilde Lake’s Lindsey Williams registered 10 points for a roster that was without two of its starters against the Raiders.

On Dec. 18, Atholton defeated the Wildecats 59-41. Mitchell said her team wanted to come out strong in the second match-up as well, knowing that their opponents were looking for revenge.

“We were definitely more aggressive than before,” she added. “(The loss) gave Wilde Lake more motivation to come back, but we fought through it. We’re coming together more as a team.”
