The girls lacrosse season is quickly winding down, but Marriotts Ridge, Mt. Hebron, River Hill and Glenelg (all Class 3A/2A) and Howard (Class 4A/3A) kept their seasons alive in Friday’s quarterfinal games.

Oakland Mills lost in a Class 2A/1A quarterfinal.

Regional semifinal games will be played Monday. Glenelg will play at Marriotts Ridge (time TBA); River Hill will play at Mt. Hebron at 5 p.m., and Howard will host Westminster at 7 p.m.

Mt. Hebron has some unfinished business to attend to from last year. A year ago, the Vikings’ season ended in the state semifinals. The team is determined to go farther this year and it took its first playoff step by defeating Atholton, 15-2, on Friday.

From the get-go, Mt. Hebron controlled the draw, the midfield and the game. With a 10-0 halftime lead, the Vikings had a running clock and could make liberal substitutions.

Atholton’s two goals — both from Ellie Matthews — came against Mt. Hebron’s non-starters in the final five minutes of play.

“We just couldn’t get it together,” said Atholton coach Crystal Shelley, who had expected a much closer game.  “I don’t think that we played scared,” she added.

Mt. Hebron won the regular season meeting, 19-9.

Draw control was a factor, said Atholton’s Rachel Day. “Getting the draw dictates the game.”

With Sam Brookhart taking the draw, the ball often ended up in Mt. Hebron sticks.

When Atholton (10-6) did get shots, Mt. Hebron goalie Maddy Fisher was there to make the stop. She had 15 saves in the game. Some were on point-blank shots.

Brookhart led Mt. Hebron’s scoring with four goals and two assists. Viking freshmen Laura Benson and Cammy Case each recorded their first varsity goals.
