A couple bad weeks to close the regular season did not prevent Chapelgate from closing the postseason in style over the weekend.
Competing in the Maryland Christian Schools boys basketball Division I tournament at Annapolis Area Christian, the Yellowjackets won three straight games to be crowned champions for the second time in the last three years. The championship game victory came by a decisive, 70-54, margin over Mount Airy Christian.
“It was a great way to end the year with the Christian School championship … a great moment with the kids getting to hold the banner and the trophy,” Chapelgate coach Frick Frierson said.
Coming into the tournament, Chapelgate (16-13) had lost seven straight games. But starting with an opening-round victory over Salisbury Christian School, the third-seeded Yellowjackets managed to turn things around in a big way.
In that 82-47 win over Salisbury, Matthew Frierson exploded for a game-high 26 points to lead a charge that saw 12 different guys find the box score. Terrell Willis (16 points) and Malik Grandy were the other Yellowjackets in double figures scoring.
The team then kept the ball rolling in the semifinals, defeating Covenant Life, 69-55. Malik Grandy and Willis shared team-high scoring honors in that one with 20 points apiece. Chris Grandy joined them in double-figures scoring with 12 points.
That set up the championship match-up against Mount Airy and it was some familiar faces that helped secure the title. Willis (21 points) and Frierson (20) led the way, while Malik Grandy was right behind them with 15.
Chapelgate raced out to a 42-28 lead by halftime of the championship game and never looked back down the stretch. The program had previously won the MCS Division I tournament championship in 2012, having beaten Grace Brethren in the title game that season.
Frierson was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Willis and Grandy also made the All-Tournament team.
