After a pair of losses against Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference competition to open its season, Chapelgate found the win column Friday night against Indian Creek.
Chapelgate, which plays in the MIAA B Conference, defeated the Eagles — last year’s MIAA C Conference champions — by a score of 70-65. Chris Grandy scored 21 points to lead the way, while Terrell Willis (16 points), Matthew Frierson (13) and Malik Grandy (11) all scored in double figures as well for the Yellowjackets.
Playing its third game in less than a week, Chapelgate started slowly Friday night and found itself down at the end of the first quarter. But coach Frick Frierson said his guys stayed the course and regrouped to grab a four-point advantage by halftime, 35-31.
“We came out kind of flat, which was probably a result of playing so many games so close together to start the season,” coach Frierson said. “But we stuck with our defense — running our half-court trap — and did a good job of spreading the court out offensively. Things started coming together for us.”
Chapelgate then maintained its cushion through the second half to pull out the victory. Seniors John Morant (7 points) and Cullen Hardin (2) also played key roles in helping the Yellowjackets hold on down the stretch.
In addition to the tests the team has already faced, Chapelgate still has several more before getting into the bulk of its B Conference schedule. Next week, for example, the team will square off against another two MIAA A Conference schools — Glenelg Country and Mount St. Joseph.
“We play this kind of schedule because, win or lose, it gives the guys confidence later in the year that they’re capable of doing things against really good teams,” Frierson said. “I think the kids relish the opportunity too to challenge themselves.”
