Visiting Catonsville played to its strengths in beating Centennial, 20-9, on March 23. The Comets return 10 starters from a team that reached the state semifinals last spring. Key among those starters is All-American Deb Milani, who won 121 draws her junior year.
Milani was similarly effective against Centennial.
“They killed us on the draw. We could not get the draw,” said Centennial coach Rachel Lenzo.
For a while Lenzo’s team was able to stay with Catonsville.
The score was 7-4 at one point, then Catonsville went on a run to take the game out of Centennial’s reach.
“They were fast and quick to the ball. They could thread the needle (with their passes),” Lenzo said. “They had some wicked shots.”
Centennial made defensive adjustments in the second half, guarding Milani closer.
“We shut her down,” Lenzo said. Still, the Catonsville senior had four goals and an assist.
Nearly half of Centennial’s goals came in the last 10 minutes of the game. Alicia Hsieh led the Eagles with four goals. Megan Oliver and Martha Hutzell each had two.
Unforced errors prevented Centennial from mounting a consistent offense.
Centennial is a young squad. There are two seniors and six juniors on the team but there a combined 11 freshmen and sophomores.
“I have so much talent. We’re just putting the pieces together. We will be getting better and better throughout the season,” Lenzo said. “I was very proud that my team played until the last whistle blew.”
