Coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to Bel Air, Centennial’s players weren’t looking forward to having to play 7v7 overtime again.
So when Oakland Mills’ Victoria Gordon scored to tie Tuesday’s game, 1-1, with 3:29 to play, Centennial quickly got down to business.
The Eagles fed the ball to Margaret Maclean who danced around or dodged at least five players to work the ball into the Eagles’ offensive circle. The Oakland Mills defense fouled and Centennial was awarded the penalty corner it was seeking.
Freshman Mary Margaret Baldy scored to give Centennial a 2-1 lead with 2:30 left.
“It was nice knowing we could have the security of having another goal and (maybe) not have to go into overtime,” said Baldy.
“I didn’t actually think the ball was going to go in, but it did,” added the freshman defender who moved up to be on the corner unit.
Centennial dominated much of the first half and a good chunk of both ends of the second half. It was the in-between minutes that led to Oakland Mills’ goal.
“I think that we were getting tired because we had a game yesterday, too,” said Kay Kelly.
When Oakland Mills tied the game, Kelly said it inspired her to work harder.
“I didn’t even know how much time was on the clock. It was all about coming back and getting another goal,” she said.
Kelly, a four-year varsity player, had the assist on the game-winning shot.
“My girls are really upset about losing. They are broken-hearted,” said Oakland Mills coach Nikki Trunzo.
While her players were disappointed at the outcome, Trunzo was proud of how her team played.
“They did a great job of marking, clearing the ball off the pads and out to the side. They did an awesome job on defense — they really did — for the amount of pressure on them.”
Oakland Mills goalkeeper Erin Hull (14 saves) stopped a stroke and defenders Olivia Eldridge and Maggie Zuelsdorf always seemed to be at the right place to break up Centennial’s circle play.
“Defensively, I think we stepped up nicely,” Trunzo said. “This was the most evenly matched game we’ve had in awhile.”
The Scorpions (0-5 against county competition) are coming off a difficult three-game stretch where they played Atholton, River Hill and Mt. Hebron, allowing each of those teams eight goals, while scoring just one.
Until the loss to Bel Air, Centennial was righting itself after losing two players — goalie Anna Cosentino (concussion symptoms) and Kate Monroe (meniscus tear) — during an 8-0 loss to Atholton.
Defender Tori Stroud has taken Cosentino’s spot and Joyce Lee has replaced Monroe.
“Tori is learning on the field,” coach Tara Carr said. “We had three games last week and three games this week, so she has had minimal practice time to learn the basics and she has been phenomenal. I give her major props for stepping up because she had no experience whatsoever before” in goal.
With the victory, Centennial upped its county record to 5-1.
