Howard County police arrested nine drivers in a sobriety checkpoint over the weekend, officials said.

Police set up the checkpoint on westbound Route 40 and Governors Run Way in Ellicott City and stopped motorists driving through starting Friday, Dec. 20, and into the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 21.

Seven drivers were arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. Two of these drivers were also charged with a related drug violation and for driving without a license.

Another driver was arrested for a drug violation and the ninth arrest involved an unlicensed driver, according to officials.

Police said a total of 950 cars passed through the checkpoint, which was staffed by both state and county officers.

Representatives from the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving were also present, and drivers passing through the checkpoint were given a handout with DUI facts and statistics, police said.
