Howard County police arrested six people at a weekend sobriety checkpoint conducted on westbound Route 40 and Governors Run Way in Ellicott City.

Five people were arrested for driving under the influence and one was arrested for driving on a suspended license, according to police.

Police said 649 vehicles pass through the checkpoint, which started late Dec. 8 and went into the morning hours of Dec. 9.

The checkpoint was manned by county police and Maryland State Police. Members of the Howard County Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving also assisted during the checkpoint.

Police said that drivers were given an informational handout containing DUI facts and statistics as they passed through the checkpoint.

A grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office helps fund Howard County Police checkpoints, which are part of the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign.
