Weather forces cancellaton of Common Core forum

The forum on the Common Core State Standards Initiative was canceled Sunday because of the weather.

The forum, co-hosted by the PTA Council of Howard County and the Howard County Education Association, will be rescheduled, said PTA Council President Christina Delmont-Small.

"In consideration for the safety of our attendees and the panelists, some of whom are traveling from other states, we decided to cancel the event for today and reschedule at a later date," Delmont-Small said.

The forum was orginally scheduled for Sunday, 5-8 p.m. at Reservoir High School in Fulton.

Panelists were to include Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Lillian Lowery, Professor of Education Emerita at the University of Arkansas and member of the Common Core Validation Committee Sandra Stotsky, National Policy Director at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute Michael Brickman, co-founder and administrator for United Opt Out Morna McDermott McNulty, professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University and a professor in the School of Education and member of the PARCC Content Technical Working Group for Mathematics W. Stephen Wilson, assistant professor of education administration at Seton Hall University's College of Education and Human Services, department of education management, policy and leadership and the co-author of "The School Reform Landscape: Fraud, Myths and Lies" Christopher Tienken, and executive director school improvement and administration for the Howard County Public School System Clarissa Evans.

All activities in the Howard County Public School System were canceled Sunday because of the weather, school officials said. That includes the Howard County's Children's Chorus Concert at River Hill High School, set for 3 p.m.
