Black Saga competition set for Howard schools

The seventh annual Black Saga Competition for Howard County elementary and middle school students is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, at Veterans Elementary School in Ellicott City.

Hosted by the school system's offices of elementary and secondary social studies, Black Saga is an academic challenge for students, testing their knowledge of African American history after months of preparation on the students' part.

All teams will then move on to the state competition in March.

The middle school competition begins at 9:15 a.m.; the awards ceremony is 11:30 a.m. The elementary competition begins at 1 p.m.; the awards ceremony is 3 p.m.

Last year, the teams from Hammond Elementary School and Bonnie Branch Middle School took the top spots.

In the event of cancellation because of weather, the competition will be Saturday, Feb. 23.
