The Academy of Finance Team out of Howard County Public School System’s Applications and Research Laboratory recently won first place in the Maryland Council on Economic Education Personal Finance Challenge State Competition.
The team, made up of Taylor Bruner of Wilde Lake High School, Dominique Eaton and Corey Johnson of Long Reach High School and Edward Lee of Mt. Hebron High School, went against 27 other teams across the state in a three-round competition. The two teams with the highest scores then went head to head in the final “quiz bowl” round at the April 11 event.
Bruner, Eaton, Johnson and Lee are members of the ARL’s Millionaire Club, sponsored by the State Employee Credit Union. They were supported by their mentor, John Hauserman, a local financial planner, and their teacher, Maddy Halback.
The students were each awarded $500 and an all-expense paid trip to the national competition in St. Louis May 2.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
