A memorial run is scheduled for Aug. 17 in Ellicott City to raise money for emergency rescue services and scholarship funds in honor of two teens who died in a train derailment last year.
The "2 Miles for 2 Hearts" run marks the one-year anniversary of the deaths of Elizabeth Nass and Rose Mayr, both 19. The women, longtime friends home from college on summer break, were sitting on a railroad bridge about 20 feet above Main Street when a CSX coal train detailed.
Registration for the run is $25 by Wednesday, $30 online Aug. 1-15 and $35 at packet pick-up or on the race day.
Proceeds benefit the Elizabeth Nass Scholarship Fund, the Rose Mayr Nursing Scholarship Fund and the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.
The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at 3700 Courthouse Drive in Ellicott City.
To register, go to http://www.active.com and search events for "2 Miles for 2 Hearts."
Russell Allwein, a friend of the Nass and Mayr families and race organizer, said the goal is to have 500 registered runners.
"From the moment it happened, it struck an emotional chord with me," Allwein said.
Business sponsorships, which start at $250, are also available. The Mid Maryland Triathlon Club is serving as treasurer for the event.
