A 45-year-old man armed with a knife and suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds died Wednesday after he charged at Howard County police officers, who shot him in his Ellicott City home, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the 7600 block of Coachlight Lane, where officers responded to a possible suicide in progress, according to a police release. Police found the man with "several serious self-inflicted stab wounds." As police entered the man's room, he charged at two officers, who fired their weapons. The man was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma, where he was pronounced dead.

An official cause of death is pending autopsy results, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
