Columbia man dies in Route 1 crash in Savage

A Columbia man was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Route 1 in Savage Tuesday afternoon, Howard County Police said.

Police are investigating the crash, which occurred about 1:35 p.m. on northbound Route 1, just before Corridor Road.

Police said Robert Allen Styers, 34, of the 5600 block of Thicket Lane, in Wilde Lake, was driving a 2008 Isuzu box truck. Preliminary investigation indicates a 2003 Kenworth tractor trailer was stopped or slowing in traffic when it was rear-ended by the box truck.

Styers was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Police said the driver of the tractor trailer, Daniel Charles Kitchen, 36, of Elkton, was taken to Howard County General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident closed northbound Route 1, which is expected to remain closed for at least another hour, police said.

In an email from the Howard County Public School System, officials said the accident had left open only one lane on southbound Route 1, and that buses would be delayed for schools in the area.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, police said. Police spokeswoman Mary Phelan said both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
