A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was struck by passenger van Tuesday, June 4 in Savage, Howard County police said.
Police said the teen, an eighth-grade student at Patuxent Valley Middle School, was struck at the intersection of Vollmerhausen Road and Castleford Drive about 3:15 p.m. Multiple witnesses said the girl stepped into the roadway and was struck by a 14-passenger van owned by La Petite Academy, according to police.
The girl is being treated at Johns Hopkins' Children's Center.
According to an email sent to parents Wednesday, Bollman Bridge Elementary School Principal Jonathan Davis said the 13-year-old attends Patuxent Valley Middle School, less than a half-mile from the scene of the collision.
Five children, ages 6-8, were on the van at the time of the collision, police said. No one in the van was injured, according to police.
Davis said the children on the La Petite Academy van were Bollman Bridge students, who were being transported from the school after dismissal. Davis said "a couple" of students witnessed the accident, and those students have met with school counselors and their parents have been contacted.
Police said the specific details of the collision are still being investigated, and no citations have been issued.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
