Children of all ages are invited to gather around the altar of Grace Episcopal Church, 6725 Montgomery Road, in Elkridge, to have their backpacks blessed at worship services on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m. All members of the Elkridge community are invited to participate in this special service to kick-off the new school year.

"We wanted to send children off to school with more in their backpacks than pencils, notebooks, and erasers," said Senior Warden Dave Blackburn, "and packing our well-wishes and prayers seems like a great addition to the regular school supplies to help tackle the academic challenges ahead."

Yes, school sport tryouts and training are in full swing, and all Howard County students return to the classroom on Monday, Aug. 26. Here's wishing students, faculty and staff everywhere a dynamic and successful school year.

It will be here before you know it! Register now to participate in the annual Elkridge Food Pantry "Give Where You Live 5k" Family Fun Run/Walk, Sunday, Sept. 15, at 8 a.m. This event is always a great time, and the energy level is so positive in the spirit of local support for those less fortunate.

This is the single fundraising event for the pantry and it is hoped 300 or more will participate this year to beat 2012, especially since 30 additional families are now being served.

The course is flat, paved and free of traffic. Baby strollers and wheelchairs welcome. No bikes, roller blades, skateboards, scooters or motorized vehicles allowed. There is also an optional 2-mile walk, and the event will take place rain or shine. 100 percent of the proceeds directly benefit the food pantry.

You can register at: http://m.active.com/running/elkridge-md/give-where-you-live-5k---benefit-elkridge-food-pantry-and-garden-2013 OR http://www.crosslifeevents.org. You can also friend the food pantry on Facebook at facebook.com/ElkridgeFoodPantryAndGarden.

A great big Happy Birthday shout out to a very special young man: my son, Luke Filar, who celebrated his 17th birthday Aug. 21. Luke is a incoming senior at Howard High School, runs cross country and track and keeps a steady hold as an honor roll student. Happy birthday, Luke! It's gone by WAY faster than I care to admit, but I am especially proud of the young man you have become.

That's all for this week, but keep those emails coming and let me know what's going on in your back yard!
