The Elkridge Senior Center at the Elkridge Branch Library is always hosting some great events. These next few weeks of June are no exception.
Plan ahead to participate in these events, which not only offer some important educational opportunities but also provide a great way to socialize with a fun group.
Celebrate Father's Day with a good, old-fashioned cookout on Friday, June 14, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. This summertime party will feature delicious cookout foods, music, games and more.
A Pancake Breakfast will be held Wednesday, June 19, 9 a.m.-noon. $4 will get you a delicious, hot, homemade breakfast featuring all of your favorite breakfast foods.
Then, on Thursday, June 20, 10 to 11 a.m., join the center for Brain Fitness, a memory-enhancing workout to help keep your brain sharp. Cost is $4 to participate.
And, nothing says summertime like an Ice Cream Social!
Join your neighbors and friends June 26, 1 to 2 p.m. Cost is $4, and, in addition to the ice cream, there will be games and prizes to win. For more information on these and other upcoming activities, call the center at 410-313-5192.
It's hard to believe that another school year is over. I'd like to congratulate the entire Class of 2013, with special recognition to a few Elkridge and Hanover residents from Howard High School — Tim Ankrum, Nick Duffy, Breccan Fischer, Cooper Gerus, Kyle Mackall, David Phillips and Natalie Singleton.
And, also to Milena Novotny, of Long Reach High School, and Annie Babcock, of Mount de Sales Academy. These are just a few local young men and women who I've known since early childhood (and even some of the parents since my own), and who, I believe, are poised to do great things.
Congratulations to all graduates on this first giant step into adulthood. Here's wishing you the best of life and love as you take on the challenges ahead!
School's out for the summer, and a great bargain hunt is the perfect kick off! Don't miss the Summer Time Yard Sale at Harwood Park Church, Saturday, June 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the corner of Highland and Euclid avenues, in Elkridge.
The Thrift Store Bag It event will let you stuff an oversized bag of any and all clearance items for only $4! This community event will also feature an outdoor yard sale/flea market; and drinks and baked goods will also be sold. For more information, contact Jill at 443-285-1369.
C.S. Lewis once said, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." A Howard County Spring Wellness Seminar entitled We Can … And We Do will feature keynote speaker Betty Holston Smith on June 20, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the North Laurel 50+ Center.
At 72, Smith has racked up some admirable accomplishments, including logging in more than 100,000 miles in 75-plus marathons; earning a doctorate in early and middle childhood development and education. Smith is proof positive of what older adults can do.
Registration deadline is June 18 and admission is free and open to the public. Small group discussions will follow the keynote address, and light refreshments will be served. To register, call 410-313-0380, or contact Karen Hull at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We celebrate Father's Day Sunday, June 16. So, a big shout out to all the men out there — whether your role is biological, adoptive, stepfather, big brother or mentor — as children of all ages honor the commitment, talents, affection and insight that a father figure brings to life.
If you've got news or upcoming events, kudos or any other notables to share, I'd love to hear about it. Keep me posted on what's going on in our neighborhood.
