The Patapsco Valley Heritage Greenway hosts a Stream Captain Workshop at the Miller Branch Library, 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9.
Trained adult volunteers are needed for the Stream Captain Team, who lead and manage other volunteers to conduct a safe and successful watershed cleanup. Registration is required at http://www.patapscoheritagegreenway/eventcal.html.
The organization is also looking for a few committed volunteers for their TGIF (The Garbage Is Finished) Team, a group of enthusiastic and energetic people who want to make a difference in the Patapsco River Valley. TGIF meets the third Friday of the month, 1- 4 p.m.
The group pulls junk and trash from the river and surrounding feed streams, performs tree maintenance and takes on other projects as deemed necessary to their mission.
If you are interested in getting down and dirty (in a fun sort of way) and want to work with a great group of environmentally focused folks, email email@example.com.
Jennifer Whiddon is a government, leadership and psychology teacher and SGA sponsor at Long Reach High School. Whiddon has received a $1,000 State Farm Good Neighbor Student Achievement Grant to lead her 10th, 11th and 12th grade leadership classes in a semester-long project on hunger in Howard County.
Her project involves a partnership between her civic-minded students and the Elkridge Food Pantry. These young men and women will determine how to best assist the food pantry, as well as research projects to add to the pantry's existing services.
The project includes a food drive, cooking lessons, a take-home herb plant project for pantry beneficiaries, and other activities.
"Last year Long Reach leadership students filled a bus with proceeds from their food drive, and delivered the food to the Elkridge Food Pantry. After visiting the facility and helping sort and prepare the goods for clients' visits, the students and I were all inspired to create a more formal partnership with that particular organization. The grant will allow us to make multiple visits to the Furnace Avenue facility in Elkridge and help purchase items necessary to support the food drive and (hopefully) any other projects the students develop over the semester," said Whiddon.
In a symbolic kick-off for the project, Lori Gerus, a long-time volunteer and local activist for the food pantry, visited Whiddon's Leadership group in January to explain the pantry's mission, goals and operating procedures. The food drive officially began Feb. 1. If you are interested in supporting the food drive or assisting with other projects, contact Whiddon at Jennifer_whiddon@hcpss.org.
Kudos to these dynamic Long Reach students and the wonderful leadership example of their teacher, Jennifer Whiddon!
